  After training in hydrology and hydrogeology, I did two internships in the field of wastewater treatment, one of which led to the thesis project I'm currently working on. The aim of my thesis is to use decades of high-frequency data recorded in the Seine to describe its metabolism and its response to wastewater discharges, in particular urban discharges during wet weather, in order to be able to anticipate oxygen depletion episodes.

  Thiruni Thirimanne is a Master’s (MASc.) student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Dr. Bruce MacVicar. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo in Civil Engineering specializing in Water Resources. Her research interests include the effects of urbanization on watershed hydrology, GIS and remote sensing technologies, and how urban water balance can be used to assess greenhouse gas and carbon sequestration impacts on developments. Her ongoing thesis investigates leveraging nature-based solutions to mitigate erosion risk in urban rivers. She will present SPINpy 1 – an open-source innovative application developed to model erosion sensitivity in urban water systems. SPINpy 1 aims to enhance our understanding of erosion challenges, marking a significant step towards more effective erosion management strategies.
